Keep a notebook

⏱ 10 min3 steps

Your notebook is one place for what you learn about using Claude: the prompts that worked, the you use, the decisions you made and what to try next. You'll make it in Apple Notes on your Mac and iPhone, or on paper if you'd rather. You need about ten minutes and your first conversation from the last lesson. It will feel a bit empty at first. That's normal.

  2. Step 2 of 3, not done yet
  3. Step 3 of 3, not done yet
  1. Make one note and pin it

One note, pinned at the top, is easier to find than ten notes scattered around.

    1. Open Notes on your Mac or iPhone.
    2. Make a new note. Call it Claude notebook on its first line.
    3. Pin it. On a Mac, choose , then Pin Note. On an iPhone, swipe right on the note in the list and tap the pin.

On Windows, use a notes app you like, or paper, and keep the note where you'll see it first.

    I can't find Pin Note.
On a Mac, Control-click the note in the list on the left, then choose Pin Note. On an iPhone, swipe right on the note in the list and tap the pin.
The note isn't on my iPhone.
Notes only shows the same note on both when is turned on for Notes on each one. If you'd rather not set that up, keep the notebook on one of them. That's fine.iCloud Apple's online storage. It can copy folders from your Mac to the internet and keep them in sync. All words
    I'd rather use paper.
Paper works. Keep it next to where you use Claude, and leave room to copy prompts in by hand.
  2. Write the four headings

These four headings hold what you'll want later.

    1. Type these four headings in the note, each on its own line:
      • Prompts that worked
      • My account
      • Decisions
      • Try next
    2. Under My account, write the email address you use for Claude and the plan you're on.
    3. Under Decisions, write the plan you picked and why.
    That's not what I see
I don't have anything to put under Decisions yet.
Leave it empty. Your first one is the plan you picked in Which account and plan you need. Write that.
  3. Save the prompt that worked

    1. Open the lesson Your first real conversation, in the app, and click the Copy button under the first .
    2. Paste it into your notebook under Prompts that worked. If you changed the part in square brackets, change it here too.
    3. Under Try next, write one thing you'd like to ask Claude next time.

Add to it after every lesson. If you take Set up later, this note moves into a file called notes.md in your , so Claude can read it too. The three files lesson shows you how.

Type the prompt into the notebook instead. It doesn't have to be word for word.

Your challenge

For one week, write one line in your notebook every time you use Claude: what you asked, and whether it worked. At the end of the week, read it back and star the prompt you'd use again.
