A week of dinners and one grocery list

⏱ 10 min2 steps

"What's for dinner?" comes back every single night. Tell Claude who you're feeding, what's in the fridge and what you can spend, and it plans five dinners that share ingredients, with one grocery list to match. Have a look in the fridge first. The first plan nearly always has a dinner or two your family won't touch, so ask for swaps until it works for your house. Allergies and diets are your call, and Claude can be wrong about what's in a food.

  1. Step 1 of 2, not done yet
  2. Step 2 of 2, not done yet
  1. Ask Claude for five dinners

Claude plans from what you tell it, and nothing else. It doesn't need anyone's name. "Two adults and two kids, 9 and 12" is enough. This asks for five dinners that fit your notes and share ingredients. It treats your allergies as rules and leaves the checking to you.

    1. On paper or in your phone's notes, write down how many people you're feeding, any allergies, and any foods you won't eat.
    2. Add how long you have to cook each night, your grocery budget for the week, what's already in the fridge and , and where you shop.
    3. Open the on your phone or laptop and start a new chat.
    4. Copy the prompt below.
Plan five dinners for my household this week. Here's what you need to know: [paste your notes here]. Use leftovers and shared ingredients so nothing goes to waste. For each dinner, give the name, the main ingredients and roughly how long it takes. Treat every allergy and every food we won't eat as a hard rule. Don't tell me a food is safe for an allergy, because I'll check the labels myself. Don't make health or nutrition claims. Use only what I've told you, and ask me if something's missing. Don't guess.
    1. Paste it into the chat. Replace the part in square brackets with your notes.
    2. Send it.

    You should see:

Five dinners, each with its main ingredients and roughly how long it takes.

    That's not what I see
My family won't eat half of it.
Tell Claude which dinners are out and why, and ask for swaps that use the same groceries.
  2. Have Claude make the grocery list, and check it

This prompt turns the five dinners into one list, sorted the way you walk the store. In one TV station's test, every chatbot's list forgot snacks and toilet paper. Prices are estimates unless you check them.

    1. Copy the prompt below.
Now make one grocery list for those five dinners. Leave out what I already have. Group it by store section, with a rough price for each item, and mark every price as an estimate. Add up the total and show the sum.
    1. Paste it into the same chat and send it.
    2. Check the total on a calculator.
    3. Read the list against the five dinners, and cross off anything you already have.
    4. Add what it forgot, like breakfast, snacks and paper goods.
    5. If anyone in the house has a food allergy, read the labels yourself at the store. Claude can be wrong about what's in a food.

    You should see:

One list grouped by store section, each item with a price marked as an estimate, and a total with the sum written out.

    That's not what I see
The prices look wrong for my store.
They're estimates. Check a few in your store's app or on the shelf. Tell Claude the real prices and ask it to redo the total.
